Favorite Fall Traditions Part 1

Welcome to my fall traditions….Part One. I am so obsessed with autumn!! I try and make it as epic as can be. So if you love the fall as much as I do…keep reading for more details!

It’s officially here! Well…for me it is. Fall has arrived in my home. I used to wait till September 1st…but why wait on the season I love the most, when I can make it fall in my home! Autumn time is so special to me. It can be special for you as well with some careful planning. Here are a few things we do in our family to amp up the mood that is fall.

Every year we build a paper chain that grows as the days get closer to Halloween. On the back each paper has a fun fact about the fall, whether that be Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, autumn equinox, Michaelmas, Samhain, All Hallows Eve, All Hallows Day, Columbus, Indigenous People’s Day, Guy Fawkes, Marin Luther, bats, apples, spiders, pumpkins, phases of the moon and the like. Every year I change up the themes and we learn and relearn things, By Halloween we have a lovely paper chain that decorates the home. If your looking for some fun facts, I will share a few at the end.

Picture Book Basket. I have a basket of picture books for the fall that we go through. Every year I pick a few to read aloud each week. I try and pick those with the most beautiful illustrations.

We make homemade apple sauce. We have an apple tree in the back yard and we have neighbors that have an orchard so some years we pick from these trees and go at it making apple sauce. Our neighbors are so kind they often have many people over and have an apple sauce party. It’s an apple bee. This is more of a work party than an actual celebration. We all work hard cooking apples and stirring. The reward at the end is delicious apple sauce that will last a couple of weeks or a couple of months depending on how you do it. This is so much yummier than store bought apple sauce.

Every year I pick one spooky chapter book to read aloud during the fall. Many times it has been Legend of Sleepy Hollow, Rip Van Winkle and The Best Halloween.

We make sure to get outside during the peak season to hike and enjoy the foliage and cooler weather. It’s one the of the very best reasons fall is so wonderful.

You waited till the end for some fun fall facts! So here it is….

  1. The Autumn Equinox once marked the start of the New Year. This is the ime when both hemispheres have the same amount of daytime and nighttime.
  2. Rosh Hashanah is the Jewish New Year and it always close to the Autumn Equinox. This is a time of repentance, renewing goals, reading scripture and eating apples, honey and circular shaped Challah bread as a symbolism to a sweet and prosperous new year.
  3. Michaelmas is a Catholic holiday that falls on September 29th and is marked as a day to remember and celebrate Michael the arch angel. This is the angel that defeated Lucifer in the war in heaven. This is a day to eat a goose, renew contracts, reap and enjoy the harvest, such as yummy root vegetables. There are stories to be shared about Michael defeating the dragon.
